Oak Brook seeks deal to avoid red light cameras

Officials offer to assume the responsibility of enforcing traffic laws if the cameras are not installed

Oak Brook officials have offered to take over traffic enforcement at the intersection of Route 83 and 22nd Street in Oakbrook Terrace to stop the planned installation of red light cameras there, according to The Doings.

"If this really is about safety and not about generating additional revenue from red light violations, I don't see why Oakbrook Terrace wouldn't be in favor of us taking over enforcement there if they no longer can handle it," Oak Brook Mayor Gopal Lalmalani told The Doings. "This is a cash grab by them."

The Illinois Department of Transportation recently issued a permit for Oakbrook Terrace to install red light cameras near Oak Brook Center in the next six months.

Mayor Lalmalani expressed disappointment at the lack of communication from Oakbrook Terrace officials.
"We would have appreciated a more neighborly approach to such a significant decision," Lalmalani told The Doings.
