Memory Care Residents Find Joy at Stables

Evidence shows that animals can reduce the effects of dementia.

For 82-year-old Elizabeth Gobby, a visit to a stable offered more than a warm nuzzle. Gobby and her friends at Grace Point Place, an Anthem Memory Care community, visited Memory Lane Stables to learn about caring for horses, cows, goats and other farm animals.

Animals can reduce the effects of dementia and are known to improve mood, increase social interaction and physical activity. The outing offered sensory stimulation and enhanced emotional well-being. For Gobby, the visit stirred up wonderful memories of her beloved pets.

“These gentle companions bring comfort, joy and a whole lot of smiles to our residents,” said Katie Shrader, life engagement director for Grace Point Place. “Evidence shows that animals do wonders for those with cognitive impairment. There’s something about being around them that always lifts their spirits.”
