450 OLCHS Students Take Over 800 AP Exams, Demonstrating College Readiness

OAK LAWN, IL — Oak Lawn Community High School students gave their best performance yet in the five years the high school has participated in Advanced Placement exams. A total of Oak A total of 450 students demonstrated their readiness for college-level coursework and earning valuable college credit.

“We are so proud of the collective effort of both our AP students and their teachers. AP classes offer our students tremendous opportunities to become college and career ready,” OLCHS Principal Dr. Lauren May said.

OLCHS students took over 800 AP exams. The school’s overall pass rate of students scoring a 3 or higher on the exams was 65 percent. Multiple courses exceeded state and global pass rates.

Additionally, 41 students earn 51 perfect “5” scores. This was the best performance by OLCHS students over the past five years.

"These scores reflect the hard work, dedication, and future focus of our students and teachers,” Dr. May said. “Our OLCHS AP program provides numerous opportunities for our students to challenge themselves academically and prepare for success in college and beyond.”

Many OLCHS students take at least one AP course during their high school career. Of these, 71 students earned the prestigious AP Scholar Award, with 20 achieving AP Scholar with Honor and an additional 20 achieving AP Scholar with Distinction. These numbers represent a 35 percent increase in AP Scholar awards from the prior year.

The College Board's Advanced Placement Program provides students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, potentially earning college credit and advanced placement, according to the College Board.
