Austin Man Found Under Bed After Police Chase Charged in Police-Involved Shooting

The man was arrested and taken to a hospital for a gunshot wound.

An Austin man who was shot by Chicago police after a chase Sept. 14 in the 1000 block of North Laramie faces several felony charges.

Pares Harrington, age 22 of the 4800 block of West Wabansia Avenue, is accused of aggravated assault of a peace officer with a weapon, being armed habitual criminal and criminal trespass to a residence with knowledge of people present, according to Chicago police.

Area North Gang Enforcement officers were on a gang suppression mission around 9:40 p.m. when they saw Harrington come toward their car, according to the preliminary statement. Officers identified themselves and got out of their car.

Harrington ran into a gangway, and as he tripped and fell to the ground, a gun fell out of his waistband, police reported. Harrington reportedly picked up the gun and pointed it at the officers, and one officer shot his gun.

Harrington then ran south into an open window of a residence in a multi-unit building. Police found him hiding under a bed inside the residence, and he was arrested and taken to an area hospital for a gunshot wound, police reported. No officers were injured.

The incident is still being investigated. Harrington has a court date Sept. 16 at Central Bond Court.
