Rep. Lilly Discusses Civic Involvement with Students

Elmwood Park, IL - State Rep. Camille Lilly, D-Chicago, visited Elmwood Park High School and spoke to a civics class about state government and to discuss legislation she is sponsoring to add civic courses for 7th and 8th graders.

“Watching these high school students get an early grasp for how the governing process works is a significant lesson to understand, especially for their professional careers,” said Lilly. “There are many challenges facing government, but it’s important to know that by getting involved you can make a positive difference.”

Lilly toured the Elmwood Park High School and observed the government class taught by civics professor Mario Fiorito. After practicing mock trials for their judicial unit, students asked Lilly questions on serving in elected office and how the realities of serving affect legislative goals for the district and state. Lilly also explained the importance of continued civic engagement beyond the classroom from students and younger generations, and discussed her current proposal for more civic courses in 7th and 8th grades.

“These are difficult times that can increase public cynicism about government, but I encourage students to remain positive and become more engaged in their school and communities,” said Lilly. “While policy disagreements are a common occurrence in a democracy, we must listen and respect everyone’s voice to keep our state and country moving in the right direction.”
