“It is important for me to stay accessible to the constituents I represent, and one of the ways I do that is by hosting these types of town hall meetings,” said Lilly. “Not surprisingly, much of the focus at the meeting concerned the ongoing budget impasse.”

Harmon and Lilly took questions from constituents on a wide range of issues, providing an update on fiscal and social issues before the state legislature. Lilly emphasized her efforts for criminal justice reform and health care, such as House Bill 3270 and House Bill 4515. Both Harmon and Lilly also promoted the areas in which compromise was made and the reductions of state spending in an effort to reach a budget with the governor.

“On many occasions, we have met the governor halfway on aspects of his agenda that he’s asked for before passing a budget. But all we've seen from the executive branch has been a series of drastic cuts to human services,” added Lilly. “While I’m happy to work on the governor’s legislative requests, I am not alone in thinking that they must be in the interests of the middle-class first, and vetoing 2016 budget over term limits, redistricting proposals and other non-budgetary ideas are not the priority issues for Illinois’ middle-class families.
