The Safest, Most Dangerous Hospitals in Chicago Area for Patients: Report

The Hospital Safety Score ranks the safest and most dangerous hospitals throughout the state.

Is your hospital among the safest in the Chicago-area or the most dangerous?

As many as 440,000 people die every year from hospital errors, injuries, accidents, and infections and one in 25 patients develops an infection while in the hospital, according to Hospital Safety Score, which recently released its fall 2015 rankings that look at the safest and most dangerous hospitals in the U.S.

West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park scored an ”A” on the list. The hospital has received straight “A”s since spring 2012.

However, Rush Oak Park Hospital scored a “C.” The hospital had been earning all “B”s between fall 2012 and spring 2015.

Illinois ranked among the better states for hospital safety. Of the 117 “graded hospitals” in the study, 43.6 percent received an ”A” grade. While there were five hospitals in the Chicago-area that received a “D” ranking none received an ”F.”

The Hospital Safety Score used 28 measures in determining a grade for a hospital. That grade represents a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors.

The Hospital Safety Score uses national performance measures from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the American Hospital Association’s Annual Survey and Health Information Technology Supplement.
