Former Fire Chief Moyer Laid to Rest This Week

John Moyer headed the Oswego Fire Department for 10 years.

The lost one of its former chiefs Thursday with the death of John Moyer at the age of 89.

According to his obituary, Moyer served for about 10 years as chief with the Oswego Fire Department and about 50 years as a volunteer firefighter. Moyer retired about 20 years ago, said Chief Rick Neitzer, who worked under Moyer.

“Johnny was one of the sweetest men I’ve ever known,” Neitzer said. “He was extremely committed to the department. He treated everyone fairly and was a great chief.”

Moyer also attended the dedication ceremony of the steel beam from the World Trade Center at Station One on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 last year. 

"He was like the grandfather of the department," Neitzer said. "He'll be missed by all the guys."

Moyer also was a paramedic who taught CPR classes to the Red Cross and was Scout Master for Troop 336. He was married for 64 years to his wife, Dolly, and was a father to three children.

Moyer was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II.

A visitation is planned for 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 1 at Dierterle Memorial Home at 1120 Broadway, Montgomery. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, and Neitzer said a funeral procession with fire trucks and personnel will travel through Oswego and past Fire Station 1 on Woolley Road at about 11 a.m. Monday.
