Palos Hills Resident Loses $27K In Apple Wallet Scam
The resident received a fraud alert from someone who identified himself as a Chase Bank representative to clear up a fraudulent charge.
PALOS HILLS, IL — A resident was swindled out of thousands of dollars in an Apple Wallet scam when a caller posing as a Chase Bank representative to correct a charge on their account, Palos Hills police reports said.
On Jan. 22, a resident walked into the Palos Hills police station to report a deceptive practice. The resident told police they received a fraud alert from whom they believed to be Chase Bank. Shortly after, the resident received a call from an 802 area code in the state of Vermont.
The caller identified himself as being from Chase Bank said he could assist the resident with a $12,000 fraudulent charge on their account. The resident was told to withdraw $5,000 and deposit in the caller’s Apple Wallet account. Police said the resident ended up depositing a total of $27,000 in four separate Apple Wallet accounts at two different Chase Bank branches.
