PLAINFIELD, IL — Plainfield is officially a town in which to buy recreational cannabis.

Terrabis, Plainfield's first dispensary, opened Oct. 24 at 16020 S. Route 59, the space formerly occupied by Hardee's.

The company will celebrate the new store with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, with Mayor John Argoudelis and Plainfield Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce officials in attendance. Continuing the celebration, Terrabis will host a grand opening event from noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 2, featuring a DJ, cannabis vendors and product specials.

"We are thrilled to bring Terrabis to Plainfield and further establish our presence in Illinois," CEO of Terrabis Dan Ambrosino said in a statement. "As someone who calls Chicago home and has deep roots in Illinois, I'm particularly excited about Terrabis' future here. We're not just expanding our footprint; we're dedicated to making a meaningful impact and contributing positively to every community we join."

The Village Board voted 4-3 on March 18 to approve the business's special use permit, about three months after trustees voted 4-2 to legalize the sale of recreational marijuana in Plainfield.

When the Board voted in December 2023 to allow the sale of recreational cannabis in Plainfield, it was with the stipulation that only two dispensaries could open within the village: one north and one south of Lockport Street, Patch reported. With Terrabis now on South Route 59, no others will be approved south of Lockport Street under current ordinances.

Besides the Plainfield location, Terrabis operates a business in southern Illinois and several in Missouri. The company is on track to open two more Illinois spots, in Dixon and Woodstock, by the end of 2024 and in the first quarter of 2025, respectively, according to a news release.
