PLAINFIELD, IL — CVS locations in Plainfield will drop from three to two later this month.

The pharmacy at 11840 S. Route 59, off the intersection with 119th Street, will close Dec. 17, the company told Patch. Customers who fill their prescriptions at the Route 59 location will have their prescriptions automatically transferred to CVS at 1725 W. Boughton Road in Bolingbrook.

"Store closure decisions are based on several factors, including population shifts, consumer buying patterns, store and pharmacy density, pharmacy care access, and community health needs," CVS spokesperson Amy Thibault told Patch. "We're focused on ensuring we have the right kinds of stores and the right number of stores in the right locations."

As with any closure, village staff doesn't "expect things to stay empty very long" — someone will either want to redevelop the site since it's "a great corner" or will remodel the current structure, according to Mayor John Argoudelis.

"What we're going to do is we're working at the village end," Argoudelis said. "We let retailers know what's available in Plainfield."

The drugstore chain plans to close around 300 stores across the country in 2024 and cut about 5,000 jobs within the last year, according to a report from Good Housekeeping. Patch reported in 2021 that the company planned to close 900 stores between 2022 and 2024.

In Plainfield, CVS also operates pharmacies at 2375 Drauden Road and 12800 S. Route 59.

"Our teams will continue to provide the community with outstanding service at these locations," Thibault said.
