Peter Rubi Stays In Plainfield: 'Let's Get The Facts Straight'

Owner John Graves took to Facebook to say that Peter Rubi will stay in Plainfield, about a month after he announced the store was for sale.

John confirmed to Patch that a couple of offers came in on the space when it was for sale, but they were too low. The rest of the team not transferring to the Uptown location wants to stay in Plainfield, so John asked for the community's support.

PLAINFIELD, IL — Setting "the facts straight," Peter Rubi owner John Graves announced in a video on Facebook Monday that his health-conscious grocery store isn't actually closing its doors.

The news comes a month after John took to Facebook to announce that the Plainfield location, at 15412 Route 59, was for sale — for an asking price of $350,000 — after the business had been struggling.

He said he and his wife, Maria, would open a location in Uptown, a neighborhood of Chicago, after an investor fronted the money for the build-out at 804 W. Montrose Ave. John told Patch they're hoping to open by Labor Day weekend.

"Team Plainfield wants to stay," John said in a video with a group of Peter Rubi employees. "We have very few people that are gonna go to Uptown. ... We're gonna stay in Plainfield. We're gonna stay open. We need your support. We're not closing."

"We want to stay, so we need your support," he said in the video.

To highlight some of the store's offerings, one employee discussed deals of berries, which she said would be good for students to "grab and go" as the school year is almost underway. She also showcased some asparagus deals before John talked about good banana prices.

John told Patch they have many clients who come to Peter Rubi asking for advice about their wellness journey, and John said he and Maria spend time helping them.

"We encourage getting people on that journey," he said.

"We're really a store that wants to give hope to people that food can be your medicine," Maria added.
