'Underperforming' Kohl's In Plainfield Is Closing

PLAINFIELD, IL — Kohl's in Plainfield is one of 27 "underperforming" stores in the United States that will close by April, the company announced Thursday.

The Plainfield store, located at 11860 S. Route 59, is one of two in Illinois that will shutter its doors. The second is in West Dundee.

"The thing is, the marketplace is changing greatly and we see it all the time," Mayor John Argoudelis told Patch. "Most of the products at Kohl's you can buy online."

He continued: "Most people don't buy their groceries online. Plainfield is a great place for businesses to be, but different businesses are thriving in different time periods, and that's what we're experiencing. There's no need for people to panic or [think] there's something we're not doing right."

The company continues to "believe in the health and strength of its profitable store base," according to a news release. Kohl's operates more than 1,150 stores across the country.

"We always take these decisions very seriously," Tom Kingsbury, Kohl's chief executive officer, said in a statement. "As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams."

The company said all associates have been informed of the closure and offered a severance package or the ability to apply to other open roles at Kohl's.

"For every store that's closing, we've got Woodman's coming in, Cooper's Hawk opening soon," Argoudelis said.

Another Kohl's location at Route 59 and Caton Farm Road in Joliet was not listed among the closures.
