20-Year-Old Dead After Vehicle Crashes Through Barrier Onto Interstate 55 In Romeoville: Police

I-55 north and Frontage Road are both shut down for investigation and cleanup and will remain closed for several hours, police said.

ROMEOVILLE, IL — A 20-year-old man from Romeoville is dead after a vehicle traveling on Frontage Road in Romeoville went through a concrete sound barrier onto northbound Interstate 55, Romeoville Police said in a news release.

The crash happened at 4:23 a.m. Thursday, and ended at milepost 260, near Route 126 on I-55, according to police.

A vehicle was traveling westbound on Frontage Road at a high rate of speed, when it hit the curve, went airborne through the barrier onto northbound I-55, and was struck by another vehicle, according to police.

The driver of the speeding vehicle has died, police said. He was identified as Jonathan Wenzel, 20, from Romeoville.

Plainfield Fire Protection District also responded to the incident, and said that three vehicles were involved in the crash. One of the vehicles had entered the interstate after traveling through the concrete sound barrier wall. Firefighters conducted extrication operations on one vehicle to remove a trapped occupant, the fire district said.

One patient was transported by a Plainfield Fire Protection District ambulance to the hospital in critical, but stable condition, according to the fire district.

The fire district said two additional people involved in the incident declined medical transport.

I-55 northbound and Frontage Road reopened Thursday afternoon after both were closed for several hours.
