Police Warn Holiday Drivers To Drive Safe Or Face Consequences

The Romeoville Police Department has announced a "crackdown" on impaired and unbuckled drivers during the week of Thanksgiving.

ROMEOVILLE, IL — The Romeoville Police Department announced on Monday, Nov. 18 that they were launching a "crackdown" on drunk and unbuckled drivers during the week of Thanksgiving. This "crackdown" will begin on Friday, Nov. 22 and continue through the morning of Monday, Dec. 2. It will be a "high-visibility" affair, the police announcement read, part of a state-wide effort to curb dangerous driving behavior during one of the busiest travel times of the year.

"Holiday traffic brings with it an increased risk for accidents," the announcement read. "To ensure your family makes it to and from your Thanksgiving feast without incident, make a conscious choice to buckle up and plan ahead for a sober ride home."

The announcement also included figures from the Illinois Department of Transportation, indicating that 15 people died in crashes during the 2018 Thanksgiving weekend. Five of those 15 deaths occurred in crashes where at least one driver had been drinking.
