Police: Pit Bull Owner Lied About Dog So Animal Control Would Take It Away

She lied about her pet dog being a stray because she didn't want it anymore, police said.

ELWOOD, IL — An Elwood woman didn’t want her pet pit bull anymore, police said, so she lied about the dog being a stray that killed her cat.

Starr Vesely, 31, was charged with making a false report to the police for allegedly lying about the pit bull.

Vesely appeared before a Will County judge Friday and a public defender was assigned to her case.

On June 29, Vesely called the cops and told them she found a stray pit bull and brought it home, where it then killed her cat, said Elwood Police Chief Fred Hayes.

Vesely told the officer she wanted Will County Animal Control to take the dog away but that they would not oblige unless she first called the police, said Hayes, who explained that animal control will collect strays but not house pets that had worn out their welcome.

At the officer’s request, animal control did come and take the pit bull away, Hayes said. The authorities then reportedly discovered the dog had a broken leg.

Two days after animal control took the dog, an employee from the agency informed the police that photos on Vesely’s Facebook page showed she had the pit bull since at least October, Hayes said.

Police and animal control went back to Vesely’s Bushthorn Drive home and she allegedly admitted the pit bull had been her pet and that she made up the stray story so she could get rid of it.

Vesely insisted that the pit bull did in fact kill her cat, according to police, and said she believes the dog may have broken its leg while doing so.
