In Skokie, it's easy to responsibly dispose of holiday leftovers, including real trees and holiday lights.
For Christmas trees, public works crews are scheduled to begin picking up real trees starting in January. Tree pickups are not done on a precise schedule and depend on weather conditions, according to village staff.

Residents recycling their trees are advised to place them beside their trash carts and remove ornaments and decorations, plastic containers, tree stands, nails and lights.
Trees will be chipped into mulch.

Holiday lights shouldn't go in the trash, as they can be recycled in a bin outside the Skokie Public Works main entrance at 9050 Gross Point Rd. The service is free of charge for all area residents and is available 24/7 through Jan. 31.
The village accepts mini lights, C7 and C9 lights, rope lights, LED lights and extension cords. No other decorations will be accepted.
