Innocent Bystander Killed In Mag Mile Smash-And-Grab Was Skokie Man

County officials Thursday identified a man killed in a smash-and-grab robbery on Chicago's Magnificent Mile.

SKOKIE, IL — An innocent bystander killed as a car fled a smash-and-grab robbery on Chicago's Magnificent Mile was identified Thursday as a Skokie man, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.

A group crashed a pickup truck into the Louis Vuitton store on Michigan Avenue before 5 a.m. Thursday, according to the Chicago Police Department. The group fled in multiple vehicles with merchandise from the store, but they left the truck at the store.

One of the fleeing vehicles, a Kia Stinger, hit a Honda CR-V, killing the driver inside the other car, police confirmed to CBS News. The county medical examiner identified the victim as a 40-year-old man from Skokie.

Following the crash, police arrested five people in the Kia and recovered merchandise from inside. Another vehicle that fled the store, an Infiniti Q50, lost control on DuSable Lake Shore Drive.

Police also apprehended two out of four suspects who fled on foot.

The investigation is still ongoing, police said.
