Man Found Dead In North Shore Channel, State Police Investigate

The man's body was found Thursday morning in the water near Dempster Street in Skokie, police said.

SKOKIE, IL — A death investigation is underway after a body was found Thursday in the North Shore Channel.

According to Illinois State Police, a man's body was found in the water shortly before 6:30 a.m. near Dempster Street.

A state police spokesperson said there was no further information available about the ongoing investigation.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office has yet to identify the man or conduct an autopsy of his body.

A Skokie police spokesperson forwarded information provided by Illinois State Police about the incident and directed further inquiries to state police.

The North Shore Channel is a shared jurisdictions, portions of which are under the jurisdiction of Illinois State Police, and municipal police departments in Chicago and Skokie, according to a state police spokesperson.

In July 2021, a 60-year-old man drowned in the channel near Bryn Mawr Avenue in Chicago. His death was later ruled accidental.

In April 2017, a Northwestern University freshman, who it was later revealed did not know how to swim, drownedafter being knocked out of the boat and into the canal in Lincolnwood during crew team practice.
