Featured Obituary:
Donna Marie (Lavorini) Doberstein, 79, passed away peacefully at Three Crowns Park in Evanston on Sunday, August 20, 2023.
Donna was born to Italian parents in rural Geneva, Illinois. She grew up with her younger sister Stephanie, walking with friends to grade school and high school, and spending weekends surrounded by her many Italian cousins and aunts and uncles--shaping her early love for food, family, friends, and laughter. Donna attended college at Depauw University, majoring in French and spending her junior year in Geneva, Switzerland and Paris, France, sparking what would become a lifelong love of travel. She was a member of Tri-Delt sorority and the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. She also began several lifetime friendships from grade school through college.
After college, Donna excelled early in her career, starting as a research librarian at small market research company Elrick and Lavidge (E&L) in Chicago, and working her way up to Project Director in 4 years. Through a blind date setup by an E&L colleague, she met Paul--her loving husband of 55 years. Donna and Paul married in 1967, and soon welcomed their two children Monica and Craig. Donna put her career on hold to raise her children (in Glenview, Illinois), while staying very active in the community, including serving as president of the Wilmette School Board for two years and being heavily involved in the League of Women Voters. With Paul and the kids, Donna continued to travel, seeing much of the country, and establishing what would become a permanent attachment to the Caribbean. Donna also formed some of her closest friendships over her 20 years in the Glenview neighborhood.
As the kids grew more independent, Donna turned her attention back to her career goals, and within a few short years became co-founder and president of the successful and well-respected CDK Mortgage in Evanston, Illinois--one of the first of its kind in the industry. Over 20 years, CDK became a source of immense pride and joy for Donna – for its reputation, financial and professional success, and the fun and supportive atmosphere she strived to maintain among her predominantly female coworkers and friends. During this period Donna continued her School Board work, became the first female president of the Evanston Rotary club, and president of the Evanston Chamber of Commerce.
After their honeymoon in St. Thomas, and frequent family trips with the kids to the Caribbean, Donna and Paul eventually realized their dream of purchasing a vacation home on the island of Anguilla, which became the family’s home away from home for many years. Several family members were married on the island, and both of Donna’s grandchildren were born in the Caribbean. After 20 years running CDK, Donna retired with Paul to Anguilla half the year, spending extensive time with her adoring (and adored) grandchildren, making even more new friends, expanding her community involvement, and otherwise finding plenty of time for food, wine, laughter, and reading.
