Featured Obituary:

We are saddened to announce the death of Ernest “Ernie” Byrom, 74, who died on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at Evanston Hospital in Evanston, Illinois, with his family by his side.

Ernie was born March 31, 1948 in Blackburn, England to Ernest Byrom and Nellie Byrom and grew up with two brothers, Alan and Ian. Ernie graduated from The University of Oxford – Magdalen College in 1969 with an undergraduate degree in Physics. Immediately after, he moved stateside to Evanston, Illinois and graduated from Northwestern University in 1976 with a PhD in Physics. His most noteworthy professional achievement was spearheading the development of Biomedical Information Technology in the Medical industry, writing several publications on the subject. Prior to his retirement in 2020, Ernie worked at Northshore University HealthSystem for 30 years.

Ernie married Antoinette “Toni” Farley on June 17, 1972. The two met in 1970 at Deering Meadow, outside the Northwestern University library, when Toni was attending a concert on the lawn. They were each other’s lifelong companions and friends and married 50 years before his death. They adopted their daughter, Liz, from China in 1996.

Ernie was an avid reader and one could always find him at the kitchen table with a book or newspaper in hand. Every weekend he made himself a full English breakfast to eat while filling out the Wall Street Journal’s crossword puzzle. As a long-term Doctor Who fan, he would spend his evenings watching, and re-watching, the series with a pint in hand. He loved his family deeply and will be remembered for his loyalty, trustworthiness and kindness.
