Featured Obituary:

Ellen Jo Ann Ryan was born on August 14, 1935, at St Mary’s Hospital in Decatur, Illinois. She was the first-born child of Leonard and Louise Ryan.

Ellen was named for her paternal grandmother, but growing up, she went by Jo Ann. In 1944, her sister Cecilia was born. The family lived in Decatur, near Milliken University. It was there that she took piano lessons as a child, and where her love of music first took root. She attended St. James Elementary School, and St. Theresa High School, class of 1953. She went on to Marquette University, and graduated in 1957 with a degree in English.

Upon graduating, Ellie went to work as a civilian employee for the U.S. Department of Defense as a schoolteacher. She taught reading and English to the children of Air Force personnel in the Philippines and England. She also lived and taught school in Denver for several years.

By the early 1970’s, Ellie had transitioned to career in social work. While pursuing a master’s degree in social work at the University of Chicago, she met Walter Rest. They were married on September 9, 1972, at the Joseph Bond Chapel at the University of Chicago. Walter had been married previously, and had five children: Andrew, Martha, Emily, Melanie, and David. Walter’s first wife, Phyllis, had died of cancer in 1971.

In January 1975 Ellie gave birth to a son, Daniel. She and Walter divorced in 1983. Also in 1983, Louise Ryan passed away. Leonard Ryan passed away in 1988.

Around the time of her mother’s death, Ellie made another career change. After taking numerous computer courses at Oakton Community College, she embarked on a career in the computer industry, where she worked for the rest of her career. Ellie first worked at a small software company called ZyLab International, and later for a technology solutions consultant called Whittman-Hart, and finally as an independent consultant. Her specialty was technical writing – creating manuals and documentation for software. She retired around 2002.

Ellie was very active in retirement. She was a subscriber at Lyric Opera her entire adult life, and in retirement also attended the Joffrey Ballet, and the Chicago Symphony. She regularly took classes at Northwestern University, and she was a member of the University Guild, serving as Membership Chair. She also took up quilting late in life.

Ellie loved sports her whole life. Her dad was a big Cardinals fan, and growing up, the two of them would drive to St. Louis to watch Stan Musial and the Cardinals. After moving to Chicago, her allegiance transitioned to the Cubs, and she in turn took Daniel to many Cubs games. Of particular note, Ellie and Daniel attended the fateful 2003 NLCS Game 6, better known as the “Bartman Game.” She was a fan of the 80’s Bears, and the 90’s Bulls, and she really took to hockey during the Blackhawks title run in the 2010’s. Ellie attended the first of many Blackhawks games at the age of 75.

In retirement, Ellie lived in a condo in downtown Skokie. She moved to Resurrection Retirement Community in February 2020, shortly before covid protocols were put in place. As was the case for so many vulnerable people, this was very hard on her, though she persevered. She was at Resurrection for a little over two and a half years, but by late 2022, her care needs had progressed. In October of 2022, she moved to Norwood Crossing Assisted Living Community. At Norwood Crossing, she received excellent care from their compassionate and dedicated staff until she passed away on January 12, 2024.
