Featured Obituary:

Joan Mary Sextro passed away peacefully on January 22nd, 2024, after living with metastatic breast cancer for many years. She is survived by her sister, Mary Kathryn Black, and was predeceased by her parents, Fred and Marion Shay Sextro, her uncle John Edward Shay, and her brother-in-law, Charles Hunter Black.

Joan was born March 14, 1936, and spent her childhood years in the Rogers Park neighborhood where she was a student at Saint Jerome’s grade school. She then attended the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Chicago and Rosary College, now known as Dominican University, before transferring to and graduating magna cum laude from Newton College in 1958 with a major in Mathematics. After college, Joan returned to Chicago and began her teaching career at Lakeview High School.

Joan was a recipient of a grant from National Science Institute and attended Northwestern University where she earned a masters in Math Education. In 1966, Joan joined the faculty at New Trier High School where she taught for many years, eventually becoming head of their Math Department. Joan retired in 1991 but continued her interest in Math education as an adjunct faculty member at Northwestern University.

Joan had many talents and interests and was loved by countless numbers of people whom she met in school, at work, and during her retirement years. She was the star of her basketball team in high school and played tennis up to the age of 80.

Joan was an avid reader of mystery stories and her love of the genre was evident in the complete collection of Agatha Christie books found on the book shelves at her lake house.

For over two decades, Joan dedicated her time and energy at the Evanston Public Library, North Branch, where she volunteered . Joan’s Impact extended beyond the library walls as she served as tutor to countless students. Her patience and dedication made her a beloved mentor to many.

Joan enjoyed traveling. After her college graduation, she spent the summer in Europe with her college roommates. She also visited Mexico and Alaska with friends and colleagues. After retirement, she traveled to Australia, New Zealand, and the Panama Canal.Joan was a talented gardener who took care of gardens in Evanston and in Powers Lake, Wisconsin. Her flowers brought joy to everyone who saw them.

She was a caring hostess, known for her spaghetti dinners followed by brownies topped with ice cream, preferably caramel. She was even better known for her warm and welcoming hospitality.
