Featured Obituary:
Francis (Frank) Joseph Amato passed away Saturday morning January 28, 2023, at Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview, Illinois.
Frank was born December 24, 1926 to the late Frank Nicholas Amato and Claudia (Cafaldo) Amato in Kingston, New York. He was the beloved little brother to Nicholas (Helen) Amato and Mary (John) Grube, all of whom preceded him in death. Frank was also preceded in death by his beloved granddaughter, Allison Amato.
On July 28,2022, Frank’s beloved wife Alice passed away. Her passing broke his heart. Theirs was a 71- year love affair that began with a blind date while Frank was a student at Notre Dame University. The two of them were like one - you couldn’t have Frank without Alice or Alice without Frank.
Frank is survived by his sister Jacqueline (Tom) Brown of Wellsville, New York, and his children: Frank (JoAnn), Anthony (Dona), Mary Frances (Joe) Nimrod, John, and Ann (Chris) Hutchings. Frank was Grandy to his grandchildren: Joseph Nimrod IV, Alice Ann (Jasen) Quinn, Megan (John) McInerney, Katherine Nimrod, and Emily Nimrod; Katherine (Samuel Morales Lopez) Amato, John Donald Amato, the late Allison Amato, and Henry Hutchings. He was the great grandy to John Vincent “Vinny” Mcinerney, and Alessandro and Elena Morales. He was also loved by many nephews and nieces.
Frank grew up in a loving and tight knit Italian home in Kingston, New York. Love for and respect of family was emphasized and lived in the Amato household. Frank attended St. Joseph Grade School and Kingston High School where he played football and ran track. After graduation Frank enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as WWII was winding down. He said his time as a Marine was his greatest learning experience.
After being discharged he worked in the brickyard, played semi-pro football, and played drums in some big bands.
In 1948 he entered the University of Notre Dame. While at Notre Dame he played freshman football for the legendary Frank Leahy. His football career ended with a broken leg, but Coach Leahy found him a job in the football office. He also coached Interhall football for Dillon Hall at Notre Dame.
While at Notre Dame he met Alice Louise Ruszkowski from the westside of South Bend. The Polish girl from the westside and the New York Italian were married June 2, 1951, at St. Adalbert Catholic Church in South Bend.
Frank graduated from Notre Dame in December of 1951. Soon after graduation he, Alice, and their baby boy left for Norfolk, Virginia, for Frank’s first coaching and teaching job at Norfolk Catholic High School. From Norfolk Frank built a coaching career that went from 1953 to 2013 with stops at St. Thomas H.S Rockford, Illinois, St. George H.S. Evanston, Illinois, Immaculate Conception H.S. Elmhurst, Illinois, and Loyola Academy, Wilmette, Illinois.
To say that Frank was a well-respected and successful coach is an understatement. His greatest accomplishment as a coach was not the wins or championships, but the athletes who finished their athletic careers and went on to be good citizens, honest workers, and good parents. His role as Coach never ended.Read more via Donnellan Family Funeral Services »
