Featured Obituary:

Janice Shugg Bruce, age 102, of Glenview, IL. Beloved wife of the late Gerald W. Bruce. Loving mother of Michael (Rinda) Bruce and Pamela Bruce Cronin. Proud grandmother of Scott and Hunter Bruce; Michael and Courtney Cronin. Great grandmother of Stone, Braxton, Cameron, Camille, and Grant Bruce; Haley and Hannah Hickman. Great-great-grandmother of two.

Janice Bruce passed away peacefully in her home on July 9, 2023, nearly three months after celebrating her 102nd birthday while surrounded by her family and loving caretakers. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother as well as a steadfast friend to many. Her tenacity for life and all its offerings was unmatched, as was her can-do mindset that guided her every day.

Born April 18, 1921, in Montclair, New Jersey, Janice witnessed countless events that shaped her view of the world. She was born at the end of one global pandemic and survived another. Her life’s bingo card included living through Great Depression, World War II, the battle for women’s rights, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the invention of the internet and all 95 of Arnold Palmer’s wins in professional golf.

Her journey in education took her to National Park College (formerly located in Forest Glen Park, Maryland) where she earned her associate’s degree in art history. She called the St. Louis, Missouri area home for many years before relocating to the Chicagoland area where she started her family and built a life with the late Gerald W. Bruce. Their 69-year marriage withstood whatever test life threw their way. Divided by thousands of miles of ocean during World War II, Janice raised her son, Michael, as a solo parent from 1942-45 before Gerald returned from his base in Okinawa, Japan. Their life on earth culminated after his 11-year battle with Alzheimer’s, but their love lasts well into the afterlife.

Janice dedicated her life to service outside of her home. She volunteered for 61 continuous years at Evanston Hospital with most of her time spent in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). Nearby at The Cradle, Janice was responsible for transporting and bonding with newborn babies. As a member of Glenview Community Church, she made and delivered meals to the residents at the Cabrini-Green Homes through ‘Meals on Wheels.’

She was one of the longest tenured members of North Shore Country Club where she could always be found on the golf course or in the curling lodge. She and Gerald curled in bonspiels from Minnesota to Scotland. Janice also aimed to pass on the joy gleaned from golf to others by organizing donations for First Tee of Greater Chicago.

She embodied every bit of her nickname – The Energizer Bunny – throughout more than a century of life, driving and golfing until her mid 90s and living independently until her final years. Having tea with First Lady Elanor Roosevelt at The White House, dinner with then senator (and future president) Harry Truman while in college, golfing the Old Course at St Andrews and careening through the Pacific Ocean on cruises to Alaska only scratch the surface of the incredible memories she takes with her to heaven.

She played an active role in the lives of all four of her grandchildren, providing swimming lessons, rides from school and a built-in excuse to not do their math homework. St. Petersburg, Florida held a special place in Janice’s heart with years spent on the white sand beaches of Pass-A-Grille and Fort de Soto and grouper sandwiches devoured at The Seahorse and Billy’s Stone Crab.

Her fierce independence was juxtaposed by a softer side that showed her love for animals and loved ones. Every phone call to her grandson, Michael (known as T.M.), ended with “I love you,” and the appreciation she felt for the two women – Eglyn and Antonia – who cared for her near the end of her life knows no bounds.

Janice’s sharp wit and humor stayed with her until her final breath as did her desire to keep going no matter what life threw in her way. May her memory be a blessing to everyone whose lives she impacted, and may there be donuts, ice cream and an evening glass of chardonnay waiting on her in heaven.
