Featured Obituary:
George M. Cohen, age 95, of Skokie, a devoted family man, veteran, and respected journalist, died Saturday, November 18, 2023, at Belmont Village in Glenview. Born January 28, 1928, in South Bend, IN, George was the devoted son of the late Herbert and Margaret, née Wagner, Cohen.
A man whose love for his family was evident in every aspect of his life, George was the beloved husband of the late Bertha, née Freckman; the loving father of Ellen Cohen (Ismael) Ramirez and David Cohen (fiancée, Katherine); and the dear brother of the late Maurice Cohen.
While George earned some college credit, his real education came from his experiences in life. A U.S. Army Veteran, he proudly served his country in Korea. After his military service, George embarked on a 36-year career with the Chicago Tribune, where he worked as a reporter, book reviewer, and copy editor, honing his analytical skills and developing a keen eye for detail.
George's love for the written word was evident not only in his career but also in his personal life. A lifelong bibliophile, George's passion for literature was infectious. He was known and respected for his insightful book reviews and recommendations.
Along with his love for literature, George was a jazz and classical music devotee. He found joy in the complexity and beauty of these genres, often spending hours listening to his favorite pieces. His love for music was matched only by his love for nature as a passionate birdwatcher. He found peace in the simple act of watching and identifying different species of birds, a hobby that allowed him to connect with the natural world around him.
George was also a talented photographer, capturing moments of beauty and significance with his keen eye. His photographs, much like the man himself, were full of life, depth, and a unique perspective. They served as a testament to his passion for life and his ability to find beauty in the everyday.
A man of many interests and talents, George's memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. His love for his family, his passion for his work, and his dedication to his hobbies serve as an inspiration for all. His passing is a great loss, but his life was a gift that will continue to touch many for years to come.Read more via Haben Funeral Home »
