JACK L. ROBINSON
Born: January 08, 1926
Died: October 06, 2013
Services: Funeral Friday Oct. 11 , 10:15 a.m. from the funeral home for Mass, 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter Church, Skokie.Interment St. Peter Cemetery.
Visitation: Visitation Thursday, 4-8 p.m. at Haben Funeral Home & Crematory, 8057 Niles Center Rd., Skokie.
The world is a little less sweet with the passing of Jack L. Robinson of Morton Grove. Robinson, 87, passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013.
For many years, Jack owned and operated Robinson's Bakery in Skokie, taking it over from his father Stuart. Jack not only baked, but used his artistic talents as the Bakery's chief decorator for cakes that graced the tables of homes and weddings throughout the area.
The Bakery was a mainstay of downtown Skokie and the Robinsons were part of the close knit business district. In fact, Jack found the love of his life at the business next door, marrying Marion (nee Nachbauer) whose family owned Fred's Restaurant. The Robinsons celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary last year.
In 1959, Jack developed an allergy to yeast that forced him to sell the bakery. He found a new path for his artistic abilities becoming a lithographer and for many years successfully operating Triple J Lithography, first from his home in Morton Grove and then from a location in Skokie for many years.
While he could no longer bake professionally, Jack continued to share his skill throughout the community. Jack, with the assistance of his children and eventually his grandchildren, produced thousands of coffee cakes, eclairs, and other baked delicacies for events at St. Peter Catholic Church in Skokie.
At Christmas time, friends and family eagerly awaited Jack and Marion's delivery of a carefully boxed assortment of Christmas cookies and Stoellen. Their Easter brunches were legendary with crepes and coffee cakes and many made the annual trip to enjoy the famed Robinson hospitality.
Jack also provided amazingly decorated and delicious cakes for family events, from birthdays to weddings. Appropriately called Cookie Pa by his 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, his presence at their sporting events and activities was greatly appreciated and he will be deeply missed.
Jack also served his country proudly in the Army in World War II as a demolitions expert.
He is survived by his wife, Marion, and children Jackie (Art) Josetti, John (Jo Nelle), Jeff (Bev), Jacey (George) Lesmes, and Jim (Sarah Howard.) He was preceded in death by his parents, Stuart and Gladys (nee Bruhn), and his brother Stuart.
