'Skokie Values Respect For All': Village Cautions Residents About ICE Activity

Skokie officials shared community resources as reports of federal immigration activity ramp up in the Chicagoland.

SKOKIE, IL — As reports of federal immigration activity in the Chicagoland continue this week, Skokie officials shared cautionary resources with the community.

Though the village has not been notified of any planned actions in Skokie, there have been reports of federal agents in Evanston this week.

"The Village of Skokie values inclusion, dignity and respect for all, and is committed to providing safe access to Village services and protecting the rights of all who live in our community," officials said in a statement.

In May, the Department of Homeland Security put Skokie on a list of "sanctuary jurisdictions defying federal immigration law."

The federal agency demanded that each jurisdiction immediately review and revise their policies to align with federal immigration laws.

In response to the callout, Skokie said it would remain steadfast in its commitment to support and serve all Skokie residents.

In accordance with the Illinois TRUST Act, the village will not support immigration enforcement operations or detain individuals based on citizenship or immigration status pursuant to a criminal warrant.
