4 Arrested In Connection With Deadly Shooting Of Chicago Cop: Reports

Two men and two women were reportedly taken into custody after a standoff with police after CPD officer Areanah Preston was shot to death.

CHICAGO — Four people have been arrested in connection with the deadly shooting of a Chicago police officer on the city’s South Side just after she had finished work over the weekend, according to multiple reports.

The four people, considered people of interest, were taken into custody early Monday morning following a long standoff with police in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, both the Chicago Tribune and NBC Chicago reported on Monday. The two men and two women were arrested in connection with the shooting death of Areanah Preston, 24, whom police said was shot to death outside of her home early Saturday after finishing her shift at the Chicago Police Department’s Calumet District on the city's Far South Side.

As of Monday morning, no one had been charged in connection with the shooting, police told multiple media outlets.

Police said Preston was found lying outside her home. She was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Police officials said that Chicago police along with a SWAT unit arrived outside a home in the 7600 block of South Bishop Street in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday. NBC Chicago reported that one person was seen turning themselves in to police around 3:30 a.m. on Monday morning and that another person was taken into custody shortly after.

A Chicago Police spokesperson told Patch on Monday afternoon that they could not confirm the reports of the arrests and said the investigation is ongoing.

"We join Officer Preston's family and loved ones in mourning the loss of our fallen hero," the department said in a news release on Monday. "Our hearts are heavy but through our grief, we will carry on her legacy of service to Chicago and its people."
