Chicago Man Turns Himself In, Charged In Hit & Run Deaths Of 3 Men

Tavis Dunbar faces three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder after police said he intentionally struck the men with his car.

CHICAGO — A 34-year-old man faces three counts of murder and another count of attempted murder after police said he intentionally struck several pedestrians who were in the street in front of a gay bar in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood earlier this month. Three men died after the crash and a fourth was injured.

Tavis Dunbar was charged after he was arrested on Monday, Chicago Police announced on Tuesday. Dunbar was taken into custody after the incident took place on Aug. 14 in the 7000 block of South Jeffrey Boulevard.

Three men, ages 23, 25, and 27, were struck and killed, police said, while a fourth person, a 21-year-old man, was injured in the incident, police said. Police said Tuesday that Dunbar turned himself in to police on Monday.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victims as Devonta K. Vivetter, 27, of Chicago, who was pronounced at 5 a.m. Donald Huey, 25, of South Holland, was pronounced dead at 5:35 a.m.on Aug. 15.

A third man, 23-year-old Jalen Ausley, address unknown, was pronounced dead at 5:35 a.m, according to information released by the medical examiner’s office.

Graphic video of the crash posted to social media shows a group of men in the street before a light-colored sedan strikes them head-on at a high speed, knocking them high in the air and down the street.

Police recovered the silver sedan that authorities believe Dunbar was driving when the incident took place, police said. Police said that the four men were gathered in front of Jeffrey Pub when the sedan careened into them.

Jeffery Pub is one of the city’s oldest LGBT bars and has a wide following on the South Side.

Video of the crash shows the men standing in the street when the car sped up and hit the men, an act that police deemed intentional by Dunbar. Police said that no further information is being released at this time.

Dunbar was scheduled to appear in bond court on Tuesday.
