Marches, Tacos, Fox Takedown In 'Worker Over Billionaire' Events Labor Day In Chicago

CHICAGO — Organizers are planning protests across the Chicago area on Labor Day, which this year falls on Monday, Sept. 1.

With the possibility of National Guard troops being deployed to Chicago ratcheting up, activists have enacted an emergency protest plan. If troops are deployed to Chicago before 3 p.m., there will be a mass protest immediately at 5 p.m. Should troops arrive after 3 p.m., then a mass protest will take place the next day at 5 p.m. at the Federal Center in downtown Chicago, at the Federal Center, 219 S. Dearborn St.

Monday’s main event is the Labor Day Rally and March, “Workers Over Billionaires,” planned in by planned in partnership with the AFL-CIO, the May Day Strong coalition, the Chicago Teachers Union, the Chicago Federation of Labor and other elected leaders, unions and organizers.

Folks are asked to gather from 11 a.m. to p.m. at the Haymarket Memorial, 151 North Desplaines St., in downtown Chicago.

Organizers say they are protesting the Trump Administration of slashing Medicaid for millions and ripping up federal union contracts and well as an unlawful takeover of Chicago.

“Labor and community are planning more than a barbecue on Labor Day this year because we have to stop the billionaire takeover,” May Day Coalition said in a written statement. “Billionaires are stealing from working families, destroying our democracy, and building private armies to attack our towns and cities.”

Here are some other events scheduled for Labor Day weekend:

Friday, Aug. 29 - A protest is planned from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., at 119th Street and I-57 (Dan Ryan Expressway), sponsored by the Southwest Chicagoland Realist Resistance. There is parking available at the shopping center west of the gathering spot.

Monday, Sept. 1 - Fox Takedown Led By Cliff Cash, 205 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago. Starts at 10 a.m. “Grab your FOX' signs and noisemakers and JOIN US to push back against the most destructive immigrant to ever hit our shores – Rupert Murdoch!”

Monday, Sept. 1 - “Serving Justice & Tacos At Trump Tower” Labor Day Rally, 401 N. Wabash, 2 to 3:30 p.m., hosted by One Fair Wage. “Join restaurant workers and other workers in standing up toe National Restaurant Association and it’s Restaurant-Owner-In-Chief, Donald Trump, who have blocked workers from getting a livable wage with tips on top. We’ll be handing out tacos since Trump Always Chickens Out.” RSVP at One Fair Wage.
