Cooling Centers Open On South Side As Heat Index Rises To 110
Here's some information to survive the excessive heat, including Chicago South Side cooling centers and where to report a power outage.
CHICAGO — A heat wave returns to the Chicago region with peak heat index values of 110 degrees expected for Monday. Residents are reminded that cooling centers are available around the city if needed.
The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning (changed from a heat watch Sunday) in effect through 10 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27 for the area. Monday will have a high of 96 with peak values of 110; and Tuesday will have a high of 94 with peak heat index values of 105.
In addition to the excessive heat warning, the Illinois EPA has issued an Air Pollution Action Alert for Monday. Air pollution levels in the Chicago Metropolitan area are expected to reach the “Orange” or “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category on the national Air Quality Index.

The combination of high temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat-related illnesses are possible. Expect afternoon highs in the mid to upper 90s and low 80s in the evening.
The City of Chicago has opened its six cooling centers around the city for the duration of the heat wave. Additionally, residents can also seek relief from the heat at 300 other facilities, such as public libraries, park district facilities, city colleges and police stations.
