Off-Duty Chicago Officer, 24, Fatally Shot After South Side Shift

24-year-old Areanah Preston was found with a gunshot wound early Saturday morning, police said.

CHICAGO, IL — A Chicago police officer is dead after she was fatally shot Saturday morning in the Avalon Park neighborhood near her home following her shift.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified her as 24-year-old Areanah Preston, according to ABC7 and the Chicago Tribune.

Chicago police said Preston had just completed her shift when she was found with a gunshot wound shortly before 1:45 a.m. in the 8100 block of South Blackstone. First responders took Preston to a nearby hospital, where she later died, police said.

No one is in custody, police said. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot said she and her wife Amy send their condolences to Preston's family, friends, and CPD colleagues.
