CHICAGO — A 26-year-old man has been charged with the attempted murder of a Chicago police officer. Police said they arrested Aaron Jenkins, of Calumet City, Saturday night, accusing him of firing a gun in the direction of two CPD officers and hitting one.

Police said Jenkins was at the scene of a shooting in the 7200 block of South Jeffery Boulevard in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood around 11 p.m. Friday. Officers responded to the area for reports of shots fired and found an adult man and a 15-year-old boy with gunshot wounds.

Authorities said an officer was hit with gunfire when she went to provide aid to one of the wounded people.

"I just want to say thank you to everybody that responded, and I'll be back soon," the officer said over the radio, according to Brown. "Have a good night, y'all be safe."

Police said the wounded officer is 30-years-old and has been on the force for two years, but officials have not yet released her identity. According to police records, the incident marks the 12th police officer shot so far this year.

"She is a strong woman. I just talked to her at her hospital bedside," Brown said at a news conference. "One of the things that she said to me, is that she did not get a chance to apply a tourniquet to one of the wounded men out there. She said, 'I just got out, and I was shot. I was trying to stop the bleeding for one of the victims.'

"It is an extraordinary commitment and police work," the superintendent added.

According to Brown, the incident began when Jenkins and his girlfriend got into a fight with two teenagers.

An 18-year-old was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center with several gunshot wounds, while a 15-year-old suffered gunshot wounds to both legs and was still at Comer Children's Hospital as of Saturday night, officials said.

Jenkins and his girlfriend were taken into custody by a SWAT team.

Jenkins has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of aggravated battery and discharge of a firearm, prosecutors said.
