Man Fatally Shoots Self After Chicago Cops Wound Him In Standoff
A SWAT officer shot the 24-year-old man in the stomach during an incident Friday night in Calumet Heights.

CHICAGO, IL — A 24-year-old man fatally shot himself after a SWAT officer shot him in the stomach during a standoff Friday night in Calumet Heights, according to Chicago police. The armed man, whose identity has not been released by police, had opened fired from a home in the 9400 block of South Commercial Avenue before barricading himself in a garage, police said.
The incident happened around 11 p.m. Friday, June 15, when police responded to reports of gunfire. A standoff ensued with officers at the scene, and a SWAT unit was called in, police said.
Eventually, an "armed encounter" occurred between the man and officers, police said. The man then was shot by a SWAT officer with a rifle before he turned his own gun on himself, according to authorities. Officers recovered a weapon from the scene, police said.

The shooting is now being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability. The SWAT officer who shot the gunman will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days as part of the department's protocol for police-involved shootings.
