Shooting After Rapper's Funeral May Have Led To 2nd Attack: Cops

Chicago police are trying to determine if there's a connection between this week's incidents in order to prevent more violence.

CHICAGO — Detectives are investigating a possible connection between two South Side shootings this week to determine whether a Wednesday night incident in Washington Park was a response to an attack outside a Chicago rapper's funeral Monday afternoon in the Burnside neighborhood, the Chicago Tribune reports. Both shootings are thought to be examples of an ongoing feud between the Black Disciples and Gangster Disciples.

Six people were injured in the first attack, which happened as funeral services for rapper Vantrease "Dooski Tha Man" Criss ended just before 12:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, outside Bethlehem Star Missionary Baptist Church, 9231 S. Cottage Grove Ave. Criss had been gunned down in a drive-by shooting earlier in October.

Mourners exchanged fire with at least two gunmen, but investigators aren't sure who the intended target of Monday's attack might have been. One victim — 21-year-old rapper Marvel "FBG Wooski" Williams — was in serious condition from a wound to the head.

In what might have been a retaliatory ambush, five men were hurt just before 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, as they stood on a sidewalk outside a house in the 6200 block of South King Drive. None of Wednesday night's victims suffered life-threatening injuries.

“It’s a high probability that the shootings were connected,” Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told the Tribune.

No arrests have been made in either case, but Guglielmi said police are working to stem further violence before it occurs.
