Ambitious Art Plans for St. Charles Hinge on Bloomberg Grant

Bold ideas require several hundred thousand dollars in local commitments, however.

The Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge could grant St. Charles up $1 million to support a temporary public art project on the Fox River, but the city council may not want to put up matching funds to secure the grant.

Elizabeth Bellaver, of the St. Charles Arts Council, foresees an interactive art project that puts small, lit, paper-like boats controlled by smartphones on the river. Such an art installation has been created in Europe. That project would be in combination with an expanded Sculpture in the Park offering in 2016. The city and various community groups will need to commit to putting up several hundred thousand dollars before a grant can be sought. The deadline to apply is Dec. 15.
