Kane County Board to Give Chairman Power to Deal in Power

On electricity rates, that is. Board chairman likely to get approval to act quickly to enter into electricity rate contract.

Rural Kane County residents could be in line for lower electric rates if the county board approves a plan to give the county chairman authority to enter into an electricity aggregation contract. On Tuesday, the board is expected to authorize County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen to sign a contract within a day of securing a favorable rate.

“As you would remember from the last time you likely took out a loan on your home, the mortgage rate changes day to day,” Energy and Environmental Committee chairman Kurt Kojzarek said. “When you can secure a good rate, you lock it in as soon as possible. The energy market is much more fluid. If we waited until the rate went through the standard procedure for approval — Energy and Environment Committee to Executive Committee to County Board — we could see 20 or more days go by, and 20-plus different rates.”

Kojzarek said county won’t act unless the rate will lower bills for rural county residents.
