Drunken Driver Sped Past Crash Site, Cops Say

Police said a man who was driving under the influence of alcohol drove through an intersection earlier this month that they had blocked off due to a crash. The driver paid little attention to their flares and flashlights, they said.

Officers arrested a man earlier this month who they said blew by a crash site where they had flares and squad cars parked.

Police said that around 10:30 p.m. July 21, they blocked off the intersection of Ridgeland Avenue and 181st Street in  because of a crash. Two officers were standing at the intersection when they said they saw a black car approaching quickly.

"We began to shine our flashlights and shouted 'stop' as the vehicle crossed the intersection," the report said. "The vehicle did not slow down or stop. The driver ignored our orders and continued on Ridgeland Avenue."

Police got in their cars and pulled over Michael D. Mulkey, 47, of the 100 block of South Lewis Avenue in Lombard. They said his eyes were bloodshot and watery, his speech was slurred, and he told police he was coming from the concert.

"I asked Michael if he had been drinking alcohol tonight and he stated, 'Oh, just a couple. I hope I'm not too bad,'" an officer wrote, in the report. " … As Michael stepped out of his vehicle, he lost his balance and placed his left hand on the rear passenger window to regain his balance."

He reportedly failed field sobriety tests and refused to blow into the Breathalyzer at the . He was charged with disobeying a police officer, driving under the influence, driving too fast for conditions, reckless driving and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
