The entire school took two hours on Friday to participate in service projects throughout the Lyons Township area, including in La Grange Highlands and Indian Head Park.

District 106 Highlands Middle School’s entire student body spent their half-day on Friday participating in a number of various community service projects in the area as part of the school’s second annual all-student service day.

Students cleaned up local parks, worked with kids and the elderly, made lunches with charities, designed blankets for the need and much more—nearly two dozen projects, up from only 10 in 2011, the program’s first year.

“It’s so good to teach the whole child about giving back to the community—the community gives so much to the kid,” said Highlands teacher Melissa Luetkehans, one of the founders of the service program along with mom Joan Metz.

“I just want them to be able to go out and all work together… This is a great experience for the kids to see how giving back can feel really good and the impact you make on other peoples’ lives.”
