WHEATON, IL — Bonita Bowls has its sights set on opening its sixth store in downtown Wheaton come summer 2025. Founded by St. Charles native Kyle Kissane, Bonita Bowls serves up açai bowls, poke bowls, wraps and more, with a focus on generous helpings of fresh, healthful ingredients.

The Wheaton store will be located near the intersection of Main and Front, in the space once known as the Sandberg building.

Kissane opened the first Bonita Bowls location in Elmhurst, followed shortly after by a Downers Grove store that opened its doors in May 2022. The Downers Grove Bonita Bowls opened in 2023. Next, came the chain's Park Ridge location.

Patch interviewed Kissane ahead of the Downers Grove grand opening. He said the menu at Bonita Bowls is entirely dairy free, adding that there are several vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options.

"We definitely are very conscious of all these dietary restrictions," said Kissane, who grew up with a brother who is gluten-intolerant.

The menu is anchored by several smoothie bowl options, including acai, pitaya and coconut. Kissane said the acai and pitaya are blended in-house without relying on artificial or refined sugars for sweetness.

Diners can choose their preferred base and then pile their smoothie bowls with strawberries, honey, almond butter, kiwi and their gluten-free blueberry flax granola, which Kissane calls "phenomenal."

Other standout items at Bonita Bowls include customizable poke bowls, fresh smoothies, wraps and salads.

Regarding the rapid growth of the Bonita Bowls brand, Kissane said in a statement, “We are incredibly excited to expand into new communities. This growth reflects our commitment to making healthy eating accessible and enjoyable for everyone. We’re thrilled to partner with passionate individuals who share our vision and help grow our brand.”
