'Convincing And Dangerous' Phone Scams On Rise In DuPage County
The DuPage County Sheriff's Office says the "sophisticated scam" could cost residents thousands of dollars.
DUPAGE COUNTY — The DuPage County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) recently shared an "urgent warning" for residents to stay vigilant after a "sharp increase" in phone scams in the county. They have gotten "multiple calls daily" reporting such incidents, in which the caller claims to be a sheriff's deputy, the news release said.
DCSO called the calls "a convincing and dangerous scam." The caller tells the victim there is a warrant for their arrest that can be eliminated if they send "thousands of dollars."
The scammers sometimes leave voicemails, with a number for victim's to return their calls. Those who call the number reach a fake voicemail for the DCSO, with prompts to talk to a deputy.

In their warning, DCSO reminded residents that they will not call regarding a warrant and will not request money in exchange for canceling an arrest warrant. They also will not take payments by phone.
They advise that residents end the call immediately and share no financial or personal information if they believe they are the target of a scam. Any suspected scams should be reported to local police. Unincorporated residents should report incidents to 630-407-2400.
