Human West Nile Virus Case Reported In Wheaton
The Wheaton resident, who is in their 60s, is among 14 West Nile Virus cases in DuPage County in 2023.
WHEATON, IL — A Wheaton resident in their 60s was recently diagnosed with West Nile Virus (WNV), marking the 14th case of the virus in DuPage County in 2023. The City of Wheaton announced the news via its website Wednesday.
In September, DuPage County reported two WNV deaths. One was a West Chicago resident in their 60s. The other death was an Addison resident in their 70s.

After the Wheaton case was announced Wednesday, city officials urged residents to continue to take precautions against the virus. They recommend:
- Staying indoors from dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are more active
- Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, shoes and socks when outdoors
- Wear mosquito repellant that contains DEET, IR 3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus or picardin
- Rid yards of standing water sources
- Ensure that doors and windows are well-sealed
Common symptoms of WNV can include a fever, headaches, nausea or vomiting and joint pain.
