On November 1-2, from 3-7pm at Casa DuPage, 311 S. Naperville Rd. Wheaton IL, Immigrant Solidarity DuPage- Latino non-profit, 501c3 (Wheaton) will launch most authentic, ambitious and aesthetically arresting Day of the Dead celebration ever in DuPage, bringing the celebration remembering and honor the dead, once again to downtown Wheaton.
The celebration will be- filling their downtown Wheaton Latino Casa DuPage community center location, and the patio behind the center, with altars made in collaboration with noted Pilsen artist Jade Nava- one recognizing COVID victims in the local Latino community-, mariachis, face-painting, the famous “pan de muertos” bread of the dead, a Oaxacan Fair Trade Market and the traditional hot chocolate. The event on both days will be closed with the traditional procession, in this case through the center of Wheaton.
Says Gabriela Hernandez Chico from Immigrant Solidarity DuPage ““the honoring of our family members,” is the most important part of the celebration. “We are here today on their legacy, on their struggle, their shoulders and above all their love.” Says Cristobal Cavazos, in the face of increased commercialization and cultural appropriation of this sacred day, we seek to keep the focus on the spirituality, the love and above all the struggle- in this case recognizing the struggle of the Latino community to survive in the face of COVID, deportations, deaths at factories as essential workers and poverty and somehow we have because of our unity and resiliency, it is our culture that keeps us together. “ Says Rafael Vieyra, cultural coordinator of Immigrant Solidarity DuPage “Death is not the end, it is a change and it is a part of life, there is no life without death , the Anglo community often wants to ignore death, but if we recognize it more, we recognize life more and how important are the people around us: our friends, our family, our community.

El 1 y 2 de noviembre, de 3 a 7 pm en Casa DuPage, 311 S. Naperville Rd. Wheaton IL, Immigrant Solidarity DuPage- Latino sin fines de lucro, 501c3 (Wheaton) lanzará la celebración del Día de Muertos más auténtica, ambiciosa y estéticamente llamativa en DuPage, llevando la celebración recordando y honrando a los muertos, una vez más al centro de Wheaton.
La celebración llenará la ubicación del centro comunitario latino Casa DuPage del centro de Wheaton y el patio detrás del centro, con altares hechos en colaboración con el destacado artista de Pilsen, Jade Nava, uno que reconoce a las víctimas de COVID en la comunidad latina local, mariachis, rostro. pintura, el famoso pan de muertos “pan de muertos”, un mercado de comercio justo oaxaqueño y el tradicional chocolate caliente.
