Wheaton's Electronic Recycling Collections to Charge for TVs, Monitors

Changes are coming to the local electronics recycling program.

The following information was provide by local officials

Changes to the city’s monthly electronic recycling collection events will start on Saturday during residents' routine electronic recycling drop-offs.

As a new vendor, eWorks Electronic Services Inc., will be providing the service. Residents can drop off electronics from 9 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of each month at the Public Works Storage Yard, 820 W. Liberty Drive.

The biggest change to this program will be a charge for recycling TVs and monitors.

TVs/monitors with screens less than 21 inches will cost $25 per item to recycle, and those with screens 21 inches or more will cost $35 per item to recycle. eWorks Electronic Services Inc. will accept cash or credit card payments at the drop-off (no checks).

Items being accepted include:

  • computers and computer equipment (such as PCs, modems, keyboards, scanners and cables),
  • office equipment (such as telephones, copy machines, cell phones),
  • home entertainment systems (such as video game systems, stereo systems, cameras) and
  • small home appliances (such as microwaves, hair dryers, blenders, power tools)
  • cooking oil (for recycling into biofuel)
  • fluorescent tube lights (no CFL light bulbs)
  • car batteries, household batteries
  • scrap metal
  • TVs/monitors with screens less than 21 inches: $25 per item; TVs/monitors with screens 21 inches or more: $35 per item

Items not accepted include: large appliances, vacuum cleaners, and hazardous and chemical waste.

Residents can also recycle electronics at the curb on your garbage day by calling Advanced Disposal Services at least one day in advance at 630-587-8282 and attaching one garbage sticker per large item (or one garbage sticker per bundle of up to 4 small electronic items).
