How Wilmette is Celebrating Veterans Day
Veterans Day is coming up on Tuesday, Nov. 11, this year.
WILMETTE, IL — Veterans Day is coming up on Tuesday, Nov. 11, with several opportunities around Wilmette to honor those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, both in times of war and peace.
The American Legion Wilmette Post 46 and the Wilmette police and fire departments will be honoring veterans at Veterans Park at 11 a.m. At the ceremony, scout troops will lead the Pledge of Allegiance and students from Central Elementary School will deliver a musical performance.
Residents can expect to hear a rifle salute downtown shortly after 11 a.m.

Village Hall will be closed on Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day and the Village Board meeting will be rescheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m.

Originally called Armistice Day, Veterans Day is always observed on Nov. 11 to reflect the signing of the armistice ending World War I at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. The observance was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 to include veterans who served in World War II and the Korean War.
