Memorial Blood Drive Honors Rev. Dr. Gordon J Straw

Community gathers to honor Rev. Dr. Gordon J Straw's legacy of faith, justice, and compassion through life-saving blood donations.

Family, friends, and community members will gather on Saturday, September 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Evanston for the Rev. Dr. Gordon J. Straw and Rev. Don McCrary Memorial Blood Drive. The event, hosted by Vitalant, is a chance to give back in a way that reflects Rev. Straw’s lifelong commitment to faith, justice, and compassion.

Rev. Dr. Gordon Jon Straw, who passed away on January 5, 2019, after a brief battle with lymphoma, was a beloved husband to Evelyn and father to Amanda. A theologian, teacher, and Lutheran pastor, he dedicated his life to spiritual formation, and human rights. Known for his sharp mind, humor, and generous spirit, Straw was as passionate about music, food, and friendship as he was about justice and faith.

“Gordon truly loved people, and he lived by the belief that how we live our lives everyday honors God and those around us,” said his wife. “This blood drive is one way we continue his legacy of care for others.”

The blood drive offers donors more than just the opportunity to save lives. This September, every donation will include a free hemoglobin A1C test, which helps identify risks for prediabetes and diabetes. Donors will also receive a coupon for a pint of frozen custard from Culver’s and be entered for a chance to win one of two $10,000 gift cards.

Appointments are encouraged but walk-ins are welcome. To schedule a time to donate, call 877-258-4825 or click here.
