GLENCOE, IL — Two longtime department directors at Village Hall are set to retire later this year, leaving village staff ample time to identify their successors.

Public Works Director Dave Mau plans to retire on Aug. 1, while Public Safety Director Cary Lewandowski will step down on Sept. 1, village staff announced.

“Given their substantial tenure, significant impacts on the Village, and exemplary abilities in their respective fields, there is no doubt that their loss will be significant to our organization and the community," Village Manager Phil Kiraly said in a statement.

"I’m grateful that Dave and Cary have each given the Village ample advanced notice of their retirements and continue to be thoughtful of the entire organization and the Glencoe community as they approach these well-earned milestones in their careers," Kiraly said.

Mau has worked for the village for 33 years, starting as assistant engineer in 1990 and receiving a promotion to public works director in 1996.

“For more than 30 years, Dave has epitomized public service and leaves a tremendous mark on the community," Kiraly said. "He has capably guided numerous significant infrastructure improvements, developed wonderful relationships with residents and has served the community with the utmost professionalism, kindness and humility.”

Lewandowski spent 27 years with the Lincolnwood Police Department before joining Glencoe's combined fire and police department in 2013.

“Cary has led the Public Safety Department with great care and steadiness, in both times of great successes and through unthinkable challenges, including the Village’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the tragic Highland Park shooting," Kiraly said. "In everything he does, Cary serves with great integrity and selflessness."

Village officials intend to begin nationwide candidate searches for both director roles in the spring in the hopes of hiring Mau's and Lewandowski's successors by their last days on the job.

Kiraly said finding new department directors to carry forward the departing directors' vision, leadership and commitment to service will be the primary goal.

And village staff said they plan to hold public open houses to recognize their service to the village and wish them well in retirement.

“On behalf of the entire Village, I wish to congratulate both Dave and Cary on their much-deserved retirements," said Village President Howard Roin. "We thank each of you for your years of dedicated service to the community and the tremendous positive impact you have had on Glencoe."
