New Trier Green hockey brought home a national championship title Sunday, defeating a team from Texas after a five-day tournament.
Here's a synopsis of the week's events from parent Libby Ogard:
USA Hockey hosted the second annual High School Hockey National Championships in Bensenville, Il from March 23, 2011 to March 27, 2011. Twenty four teams from eighteen states came to compete. New Trier Green, the 2011 Illinois State High School Champion, met teams from Ohio, Texas and New
York and won each match to make it to the semi finals on Saturday March 26, 2011. They met rival Glenbrook North in the semi final game, a rematch of the State Championship game played at the United Center. This time the New Trier
bested Glenbrook North 6 to 2 with Colby Atkinson in New Trier net. The Sunday
Championship game featured Southlake Carroll, Texas. Southlake’s goalie Aaron
Smith faced 20 shots in the first two periods before giving up a goal in the final
minute of the period to New Trier’s Joe Miller with an assist from Bobby Acri.
Both teams came out strong for the third period, Southlake Carrol pepperd Greg
Ogard with 11 shots on net, but Ogard held firm. New Trier Seniors George Ross
and Greg Smart each scored a goal to win the game 3-0.
Greg Smart was the top scoring player in the tournament earning 16 points for 8 goals and 8 assists. Daniel Superina ranked 8th with 11 points earned for seven
goals and 4 assists. Other top point earners represented Missouri, Texas, Arizona,
Florida and Indiana.
Greg Ogard, Senior for New Trier earned a shut out in the first USA Hockey’s
sanctioned National High School Championship in 2010 held in Bensenville, IL and again this year, facing 22 shots for the game.
As maybe fitting for the last game of the season, all three goals in the
championship game were scored by seniors, New Trier Green will graduate 13
seniors, from their team of 20.
