Winnetka-Northfield Library Board Candidate Q&A: John Canfield

Get to know the candidates before the April 5 election.

Winnetka-Glencoe Patch: How would you assess the state of the library district’s budget?

John Canfield: These times call for fiscal restraint and the library district must
continue to look for ways to provide a wide variety of services to the greatest number of patrons in an efficient way. We should be prudent with our money, both short-term and long-term.

Patch: What are some things the library can do to keep up with the new ways people access literature (ebooks, iPads, nooks, Kindles, etc.)?

Canfield: The library can continue programs to offer patrons access to literature on new electronic reading devices, while also offering traditional books. It is important to provide a balance so that all members of the community can be served.

Patch: Is the library adequately providing resources such as computers, study rooms, reading areas to patrons? Does the library need upgrades to its facilities?

Canfield: I think the recent community survey showed there is always a need for more computers and study rooms. One of the library board’s challenges will be how to serve patrons from a wide age range by providing them with the best materials and facilities possible.

Patch: What is your favorite childhood book? What are you currently reading?

Canfield: As the son of college English professor, I read everything I could
get my hands on. I loved biographies and autobiographies, and I remember fondly the first time I read Booker T. Washington’s Up From Slavery. I just finished the biography Churchill by Lord Moran.

Patch: What else would you like voters to know about your positions on issues, point of view or qualifications?

Canfield: I’ve been involved in language and literature all my life. As a former English professor at the US Air Force Academy and as a private sector marketing communications professional, I understand both business and communications.
